Rowmark acrylic is a multi-layer cast acrylic sheet designed for engraving and sandblasting, commonly used to produce ADA tactile and Braille signs. Its layered construction allows a top color layer to be removed during engraving, revealing a contrasting base layer for high-visibility raised text and pictograms.

Not every sign requires Braille, but ADA guidelines mandate Grade 2 Braille alongside raised characters for permanent room identification signs, such as restrooms, exam rooms, and office numbers. Directional and informational signs generally require raised characters only when they label permanent rooms or spaces, not general wayfinding messages.

ADA standards require tactile characters to be mounted between 48 and 60 inches above the finished floor, measured to the baseline of the lowest and highest tactile characters, and signs must typically be installed on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door for consistent accessibility.

Raised characters are tactile letters and numbers readable by touch for people with low vision, while Braille consists of raised dot patterns readable by fingertip for individuals who are blind.
